Today, we are excited to be taking a look at one of the most unique Mega Construx sets to be released – the Master Chief Collection set, which was the MCX Halo exclusive product for San Diego Comic Con in 2020. Due to the COVID outbreak, SDCC was cancelled, and so this set was made available via online retailer Mattel Creations for $20 – selling out almost immediately.
The set is designed to emulate the journey Halo fans have had with the Master Chief up to this point – providing us with all of his iconic armours in one comprehensive collection.
The first figure we get is the Mark V armour from Halo: Combat Evolved – the first version of the Chief’s iconic MJOLNIR armour we see in the games. This armour comes in a light green armour which is different to the metallic colour used in the 10th Anniversary Heroes season, and comes with a M6D Magnum handgun – although the sculpt is the same as all the Mega Magnums. This figure features a nice wash which helps to the details to pop, and which really helps to sell the first rendition of the Chief.
Next up we have two versions of the Mark VI armour – the armour which Master Chief dons during the events of both Halo 2 and Halo 3. Here, we get a unique bright-green variant of the Chief with a black-wash, gorgeously emulating the Halo 2 Anniversary version of the Chief’s armour. This figure is accompanied by two Black M7 SMGs with silver dry-brush details. The Halo 3 version of the armour comes in a much darker and more metallic tone, with nice dry-brushing details and also some nice damage on the chest like the armour features in the third game. This version comes with the M6 Spartan Laser – and there are some great subtle details on this one which help it to pop.
Following on from this we have the Mark VI Mod armour – the armour which Master Chief dons in Halo 4 after receiving several upgrades from Cortana. This figure features the darker, more metallic tone of green, and feels exactly like it was pulled out of a Halo 4 cutscene – with everything from the armour to the visor feeling spot-on in terms of colour. This is quite possibly my favourite figure in the set as I feel it perfectly represents the first outing the 343 Chief armour saw. This figure includes an ARC-920 Railgun, which was one of the main new weapons introduced in Halo 4.
After this, we have the Mark VI Gen II armour. This is the armour which Master Chief is equipped with in Halo 5 Guardians, and unfortunately, it is my least favourite in the pack. Whilst the helmet features some great details including light paintwork, unfortunately the green under-suit (which is accurate!) prevents the figure’s details from fully popping. If the figure had some of the red details seen on this under-suit then it may work a little better, but this one just doesn’t quite hit the spot for me when compared to the others. This Chief does come with a nice variant of the Type-1 Energy Sword, however, which does benefit from some intricate details.
Lastly, but by all means not less, we have a version of the Mark VI Gen III Mod armour, which is the armour which John will don in Halo Infinite. This is arguably my favourite version of this armour – with a gorgeous black-wash which really helps the details to pop whilst also making this feel like a suit of armour which has suffered a beating whilst floating in space. This figure includes a nice MA40 Assault Rifle – the new primary firearm in the upcoming game.
Overall, this is a solid figure pack with some wonderful figures, and a gorgeous display. The included Cortana and AI Chip, combined with the light-up packaging, all help to make this feel like a premium product which really encapsulates the best of what Mega Construx can offer to fans of Halo.
