Douglas-042, originally bearing the name Douglas Rutland, hailed from the outer colony world of Asphodel, where his journey as a Spartan-II began in 2517. Like his fellow Spartan-II candidates, he underwent the transformative augmentations in 2525, although initially, his body struggled to adapt to the rigorous enhancements. Alongside other Spartan-II washouts, including Jerome-092 and Alice-130, Douglas was granted a second chance through successful re-augmentation, resulting in the formation of Red Team, led by Jerome.

In the tumultuous year of 2531, Douglas-042 and Red Team became pivotal figures in the Battle for Arcadia. It was during this tumultuous battle that they crossed paths with the UNSC Spirit of Fire. Amidst the chaos, the Covenant abducted Professor Ellen Anders, igniting a perilous journey that led both Red Team and the Spirit of Fire into the heart of the Battle of the Etran Harborage. Douglas-042 and his comrades played a decisive role in achieving victory, although the Spirit of Fire paid a steep price, losing its slipspace drive and prompting its crew to enter stasis for nearly three decades.

Fast forward to the year 2559, and Douglas-042 found himself with the Spirit of Fire hovering above Installation 00, also recognized as the Ark. During their explorations, Red Team confronted the formidable leader of the Banished, Atriox, who initially bested all three Spartans, inflicting severe injuries upon Douglas-042. After a determined recovery, Douglas assumed command of a force supporting Jerome-092's daring infiltration of the Enduring Conviction. With the invaluable assistance of UNSC AI Isabel, Jerome activated the ship's devastating glassing beam, inciting the Ark's sentinel forces to rise against and ultimately annihilate the Enduring Conviction.
