The discovery of Bastion was the culmination of a series of events involving 343 Guilty Spark and Rion Forge that had been unfolding since the end of the Human-Covenant War in 2552. After the firing of the unfinished Installation 08 over the Ark in December 2552, the monitor carapace of 343 Guilty Spark was destroyed. His mind, however, survived in a damaged state, and was discovered on the Ark by the UNSC Rubicon in 2554.

The Rubicon was comandeered by 343 Guilty Spark who was in search of the Librarian, but due to unknown circumstances, crashed on the planet of Geranos-a. The crash killed the crew, but 343 Guilty Spark survived, and was later recovered by the crew of the Ace of Spades. knowing they could help each other on their respective missions, Rion Forge and Spark agreed to help each other.

During their combined search for the Librarian and Rion Forge's father John Forge, Spark contacted an essense of the Librarian at Mount Kilimanjaro on Earth, who provided him with a Forerunner artifact he needed to unlock. The search to unlock the Librarian's gift eventually resulted in the discovery of Bastion, a Forerunner shield world modeled in the image of Earth. There, Spark was made monitor of the installation and transported it out of the reach of Cortana and the Created.
